Bermudagrass
Hydroseeding
HYDROSEEDING BERMUDA SEED:
Hydroseeding works very well as a method to successfully
establish turfgrass using zoysia or bermuda seed. However, a
couple of key points need to be considered when measuring your
area and applying the mulch with the seed, in order to increase
the odds for success.
Soil temperature is still a critical factor, although some
applicators include green dye or other dark colored agents in the
tank mix in order to warm the seed bed up earlier - this does
help, but growth will still be slow, until SOIL temperatures are
consistently over 60 degrees F (similar to the night air
temperature).
Hydromulch application can improve and benefit soil moisture
levels to help germinate the seed, especially if a commercial
wetting is added to the tank mix. Moisture is especially
critical for a successful seeding of zoysia which needs readily
available moisture to germinate well. However, just using
hydro application with its initial tankload of water is not enough
- additional rainfall or irrigation must still be applied
regularly for the first 2-3 weeks for the best results.

GRASS- Turfgrasses |
Seed planting depth can be even more critical in a hydro
application process, as a too thick layer of mulch will cover the
bermuda or zoysia seed and prevent it from receiving the needed
light to stimulate the germination process.
Do
Not plant the seed first and "cap it" with a layer of
hydromulch over the top of the seedbed - this is always too thick
a cover for the seeds, and germination results will be very slow
and disappointing. Mixing the seeds into the tank is more
recommended, but again - do not apply too thick a layer or the
seeds may be buried too deeply. Also, a too-thick layer of
mulch may leave the seeds hung up too far off the ground to root
in properly - the seeds need to be fairly close to the soil
surface so that the new roots can be .
Shade factors do not change with a change in the seeding
technique for either zoysia or bermudagrass seed. Bermudagrass
needs a minimum of 6 hours good sunlight each day to grow well and
thrive. Zoysia seed will germinate poorly in too much shade,
but mature zoysia can tolerate shade, and the plants from
surrounding areas may be able to creep in and cover nearby bare
areas with moderate shade conditions.
