Bermudas
for The improved SEEDED varieties;
Riviera, Yukon and Princess 77 are
NOT recommended for use
on commercial golf course greens.
They can be used for home putting
greens IF it is understood that ball
travel will be different than when
playing on a commercial Bermuda golf
course green. That said, these
varieties DO OFFER the best choice
in a seeded home putting green using
a Bermuda seed.
Why NOT
Recommended? Princess 77, Yukon
and Riviera are FAIRWAY
quality grasses… when used on greens
(mowed 3/8 and below) they do NOT
produce a smooth putting surface
such as found with the latest
Hybrid Bermudas. The ball travel
tends to bounce or be off “true”
going to right or left in travel.
<< Princess
77 -- Mowed at 1/4" Green Height. |
WHAT DO
GOLF COURSES USE ON GREENS?
For best putting
greens you need to use an improved
“green quality” grass such as Tifdwarf,
Tifgreen, etc. All green quality
grasses can only be plugged, sprigged, or sodded (no
seeds). All golf course use "HYBRID
SOD VARIETIES" on their greens. They
do use some of the seeded varieties on
fairways, but they do NOT use seeded
varieties for greens. It will work (seed on
a green), but only where the
individual understand it will provide a
“less than normal” putting surface. – An
average green size is 5000 sq. ft. on most
golf courses. Contact a local sodding
company for "hybrid bermudas".
Note that NONE of
the seeded varieties are considered green
quality at this time. Bermuda Tif-419
is also NOT a good choice for greens, as it
also is considered by turf managers to be a
fairway quality grass. All modern greens
are generally mowed daily to provide a
uniform grass surface. Occasionally the
course may skip one day of mowing (such as
on Monday), but it is still mowed 6 days a
week. Other management practices such as
fertilization and insect / disease control
are based on local needs and usage.
SEEDED BERMUDA FAIRWAY USES:
We sell several
products that are considered Fairway quality
greens.
Fairways are generally maintained
at ˝ +/- inches.
The Seeded
fairway varieties are:
HIGH QUALITY:
- Princess 77 (Top
of line / Excellent proven quality –
Fine leaves)
- Rivera Bermuda
- Yukon Bermuda
MID
RANGE QUALITY:
- Triangle Blend -
(Second best choice… not quite as fine a
leaves / more economical) – Blend of 3
fairway quality varieties.
- Mohawk - (Best
where salinity may be an issue).
- La Prima Blend
(Usually Paloma & SR-9554)
- SR-9554
- Sydney, Sultan &
Panama. - (Occasionally used alone).
Other varieties for where price / cost
over quality is more important can also be
used for fairways. They will however
generally not be as dense or nice as the
ones above.
If you want the
finest textured fairways in a seeded Bermuda
grass – Riviera, Yukon or Princess 77 is
preferred choice. On areas where mowing
will be above 1” there is not much
noticeable difference between Princess and
other varieties. Triangle Blend makes a
good choice where cost of establishment is
more important than a fine bladed Bermuda.
It will look similar in color to others
(Princess 77) but is slightly wider and less
dense. As mowing levels move below ˝ inch,
Princess tends to look better than the other
varieties.
