WHY USE MOHAWK, GIANT & CHEYENNE?

About Cheyenne Bermuda... Did you do know that Cheyenne and most of the other named Forage Bermudas came from their initial use in Turf Breeding & Marketing Programs. As time goes on we will probably see more of this.

For example - We did not know how Mohawk (originally and still used as a turf variety) would work at first, but we put it into forage trials. Then we see results that it often out yields Wrangler, Guymon, and several sprigged varieties and even some of the seed blends sold on the market.  This got the forage department excited and we started using it in the Ranchero Frio Blend. Managed like forage, we should get several benefits from Mohawk.

1)       The fast germination of Mohawk may help with weed and unwanted grass competition.

2)       Cold tolerance (High with Mohawk)

3)       Disease resistance

4)       High yields / Even produces in higher salinity soils.

5)       More leaves per stem area

6)       Lower growing plant may help creep under the Giant and Cheyenne to fill in faster (this also may help in situation when you have Giant winter kill)

Also, While Giant is known for its great production the the first year (comes out fast and establishes quick). Mohawk also does a great job and has good yield in the establishment year. That's why we want to keep it as a component of the blend.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RANCHERO & GIANT BLENDS
Some pasture blends are a mixture of common and giant blend (Examples include Texas Tough, Pasto Rico Blend, etc.)  Ranchero Frio is a blend of 2 certified varieties, Cheyenne and Mohawk along with Giant Bermuda.  Yields will be similar to Texas Tough, as will establishment and hardiness. (Ranchero would definitely have more cold tolerance / ability to survive low temps with less winter damage).  The biggest difference will be in leafiness.  Ranchero Frio variety blend will be leafier and have less stem than Texas Tough
