Why Use Mohawk, Giant & Cheyenne II In Your Pasture
About Cheyenne II Bermuda Grass...Did you do know that Cheyenne, Mohawk and most of the other named Forage Bermudas came from their initial use in the Turf Breeding & Marketing Programs?
As time goes on we will probably see more of this as turf grass is very much in demand -- thus there is more development of grass types in the turf grass and home lawn area.
At first, it was not known how Mohawk -- originally and still used as a turf variety -- would work as a forage grass, but Pennington put it into forage trials. Then they began to see
surprising results such as that
Mohawk often
out yields Wrangler, Guymon, and several sprigged pasture varieties as well as some of the pasture seed blends sold on the market. This got the forage department at Pennington Seed excited and we started using it in the
Ranchero Frio Blend. When managed like forage, there should be several benefits from Mohawk Bermuda Grass.
- The fast germination of Mohawk may help with weed and
unwanted grass competition.
- Cold tolerance (High with Mohawk)
- Disease resistance
- High yields / Even produces in higher salinity soils.
- More leaves per stem area
- Lower growing plant may help creep under the Giant and
Cheyenne to fill in faster (this also may help in situation when you
have Giant winter kill)
Also, While Giant is known for its great production in the first year
-- it comes out fast and establishes quick -- it's performance in subsequent years could use some help. Mohawk also does a great job
and has good yield in the establishment year. That's why we want to
keep it as a component of the Ranchero Frio Bermuda Grass Seed blend.
Difference Between Ranchero & Giant Bermuda Grass Seed Blends
Some pasture blends are a mixture of common and giant blend (Examples include Texas Tough, Pasto Rico Blend, etc.) Ranchero Frio is a blend of 2 certified varieties, Cheyenne II and Mohawk along with Giant Bermuda. Yields will be similar to Texas Tough, as will establishment and hardiness. (Ranchero would definitely have more cold tolerance / ability to survive low temps with less winter damage). The biggest difference will be in leafiness.
Ranchero Frio variety blend will be leafier and have less stem than Texas Tough
