Common Bermuda Grass Is The Most Planted
Even so ... Common Bermudagrass is still one of the
most planted varieties in seed form. Common Bermuda Grass
is cheaper and more economical that the
vegetative
selections, having dense growth, fast to establish speed, low cost of seed
along with good overall characteristics make it still a popular choice
for lawn and pasture
needs. We sell an improved form of common bermuda seed at common bermuda seed pricing -
Sahara is an excellent choice where cost is a major factor.
This is a perennial sod former, with a dark green color, spreads by rhizomes
and stolons - developing into a low growing, good quality turfgrass or forage. The common Bermuda also has a high degree of insect and disease tolerance.
It is well adapted to salt spray
and coastal settings and has an extensive root system for drought tolerance.
Overall it is a low cost, persistent, aggressive
vegetation.

Newer Turf Type Bermuda Grasses...
MEDIUM QUALITY BERMUDAS
Are now available in both
seeded and vegetative (sod and sprigs) established varieties.
The newer varieties are finer and
can usually be mowed lower and look noticeably
different from common varieties. For a nice lawn or for
sports field applications most any of the Medium Quality
Bermudas make
excellent choices and are considered fairway quality varieties
(used on basic type golf fairways). The Triangle Blend is probably the most
popular of these varieties. Turftype Bermuda, La Prima,
Mohawk, and Savannah are also excellent
cultivar blends. These varieties are usually be mowed above 1" with a conventional mower
and below that with reel mowers. They look their best at
heights from 1.5 to 2.5 inches, but can usually accommodate
heights as low as as 3/4 inches.
TRANSITION ZONE CHOICES
(States with Cooler winter temps)
Mohawk,
La Prima and Prima XD Yukon are excellent choices
for cooler climate areas (transition zone states) where
lower winter temperatures often cause winter kill in common
Bermudagrass. Mohawk and Yukon are the most "cold tolerant"
and higher quality bermuda in a seeded form that will survive
cold winters with the least amount of winter kill damage.
PREMIUM FAIRWAY & LAWN QUALITY
For top quality, higher input - PREMIUM fairway quality (frequently mowed
4-6 times week with a reel mower) turf used for sports fields,
lawns and other uses... especially where a thick, fine, dense low-mowable
(green heights) grass is needed... the Princess 77 and Yukon, and
Riviera
Bermudas are the best choices. The Prima XDBlend
is on the high end of medium input and makes a beautiful dense
lawn with a slightly more economical cost than planting just
Princess. Princess 77 and the Prima-XD will provide you
with compatible quality to Tif-419 lawns. (Visit NTEP to see comparisons).

OF SEEDED VARIETIES |
Improved Common Bermuda Grass
"Improved" common
types are mostly seeded varieties and are darker green, deeper rooted, medium textured and
moderately denser compared to the common Bermudagrass. They are general purpose, turf-type
Bermuda grasses used for lawns, parks, roadsides and sports turfs. These should be used in
areas where improved characteristics are desired when compared to common but quality and
level of maintenance will be lower than the vegetative hybrid improved
cultivars. Seedland sells several turf-type
"seeded" improved varieties.
The vegetative hybrids are generally
used in more
intensive maintenance turfs such as low mowed and fine golf
greens. Hybrids can only be established from sod or
sprigs.

BERMUDA GRASS ALMOST PUTTING GREEN QUALITY!
Currently Princess 77 ,
and
Yukon are the latest improved varieties, with seeds now available.
Costs of these seed are high... but compared to sodding a similar hybrid variety for comparable quality, they are usually much cheaper to establish. You will find these
varieties used for home greens where a
perfect green quality is NOT required.
While used for some home greens they are NOT
green quality varieties and are not use for
greens on most golf courses (For greens you
need a hybrid quality GREEN variety.)
These improved seeds
are generally in limited supply because this grass is a very fine
type suitable for golf course use and even home putting green usage.
Princess 77 and Yukon seeds are
fairly expensive (Often selling
for 8-10 times the price of common) as they are more difficult to produce...
and are currently only available in limited quantities with demand
often exceeding supply. Riviera and Yukon generally sell out
each spring due to limited production. Supplies of Princess
are also short but lately have been available year round.

Improved Bermudas That Are Sodded or Sprigged
By Vegetative Means:
Ormond has medium texture and turf density and has about the darkest green with
blue tint of the Bermuda grasses. Ormond was introduced in the early sixties and has since
been a success for athletic fields, golf course use. The variety of this grass is not sold
to the public. Bermuda grass mite and dollar spot disease are its major problems.
Tifdwarf was introduced in the sixties and has a dark green color and is
extensively used for putting greens and due to the high maintenance requirements it is not
used for lawns. It is a very dark green, very low growth habit, with dense turf. And
normally requires over seeding in the winter and comes back as soon as the weather warms
up. It is susceptible to caterpillar and mole cricket damage in the areas frequented by
these pests. - www.lawnplugs.com

Bermuda Grass Hybrid Variety Sods
NOTE: Hybrid varieties do NOT produce seeds - To plant or replace these
varieties you must obtain and use either
plugs, sprigs or sod. Contact a local
landscape or sodding company as to
availability of these varieties in your area.
Tifgreen has a beautiful dark green color, and has
a ground hugging growth making it ideal on golf courses, athletic fields used for tennis,
softball, baseball, and in countries where lawn games such as croquet, cricket, lawn
bowling badminton is popular because of the fine texture and density. It is a high
maintenance grass requiring watering, fertilization and frequent mowing to retain the low
even height it is popular and is probably the most used of the Bermuda
varieties.
Tif 419 - 419 Bermuda is an improved variety that is
vegetatively established. Used extensively on sodded
Football and Baseball fields. Also used on many golf course
greens in the south. Plugs of this variety are available at
www.lawnplugs.com . The
closest to this variety in a seeded Bermuda would be
Princess 77 ,
Prima XD Blend, or
Yukon. Of these three
Yukon probably becomes the closest to looking the same, however
all varieties planted side by side will exhibit certain
differences in texture and color. The best option if
trying to improve / increase the density of a hybrid Tif lawn is
to overseed all areas of the lawn with the replacement variety
to try to minimize any visual differences the eye may observe.
Tifway 419 and Celebration are
the only hybrid plug varieties that we sell for more info see
Lawnplugs.com
Tifgreen II is an improvement over the Tifgreen version for better resistance to
colder weather and nematode infestations. It develops as full a growth for the lush look
needed for low mowing potential.
Tiflawn is an older version and was developed for lower growing ability,
denseness, good texture, and like other Bermudas grows fast and repairs quickly and this
makes it an excellent choice for athletic fields, lawns with high traffic areas and parks.
And like the majority of the Bermuda grasses has a good tolerance to drought.
Tifway is similar to Tifdwarf in the intensity of color and with the medium
texture of most the Bermudas with its strong strength being its resistance to pests such
as the Bermuda mite.
TIFWAY II is the next improvement over Tifway and is said to have a better
resistance to nematode infestation and can stand the cooler temperatures. It is not as
durable as Tiflawn and like many of the improved Bermudas takes a good maintenance program
to keep the lawn in a-one shape.
FloraTex is one of the Bermudas developed in Texas and Florida and is an
improvement over the common varieties and has a medium texture that is not as fine as the
Tif varieties and requires less fertilizer and has better drought resistance. This variety
is vegetatively planted and used in finer lawns.
There are many, many more of both sodded (vegetative) and seeded
varieties available to the consumer to plant. Some are actual
varieties that came out of public (university) or private breeding
programs. Some are simply selections that a particular sod company
has decided to name and sell as it's "own" private label named
variety.
